York’s Baedeker Raid – 29 April 1942

Bar Convent damage 1942

Our next event is a 'real talk' in Clements Hall, at 7.30pm on Friday 23 September 2022.

Malcolm Brooke will be telling us about the background to the Baedeker raid on York. He will explain the technology available in 1942 to locate and defend targets, and what happened on the night, both in the air and on the ground. He will discuss the folklore surrounding the idea of a 'lone Frenchman' defending York and then show a 'Then and Now' sequence, with the major damage locations. Finally he will highlight how our area once again suffered in 1945.

Malcolm worked for Ministry of Defence schools for many years.

All welcome. Our doors will open at 7pm and tea/coffee and biscuits will be available.

You can become a member of the History Group for £5 for 2022, which gives you reduced entry (£1) to talks. Non-members are also welcome, at a cost of £3 on the door.
