Boozing, booze and boozers in our area

Bottle and JugIn May, one of our history group members, Rob Stay gave us a fascinating talk about the history of pubs, brewing and drinking in the South Bank area of York. He ranged from Roman times right through to the present day, and clarified a few points about inns, taverns, pubs, beerhouses, alehouses and tippling houses on the way.

Rob divided South Bank into three areas, each with their own characteristics:

  • Blossom St, The Mount and Tadcaster Rd

  • Clementhorpe and Bishopthorpe Rd

  • The Nunnery Lane area

He also featured local brewing, and the effects of the temperance movement.

Rob has very kindly provided us with his notes, which we now have on our website here.
