Our projects

While our main activity involves a programme of talks relevant to our area each year, our members have also been involved in a range of projects, researching a wide collection of themes. These might be individuals or a group project, sometimes involving other people in our neighbourhood. Since we started in 2013 there have been a surprising number of these, showing the interests and dedication of our members over a long period. Several have included project work with local primary and secondary schools.

One of our earliest ongoing research projects covered the history of our local shops, resulting in books about Bishy Road in 2018, South Bank in 2019, Nunnery Lane and Clementhorpe in 2021, and Bishophill and Skeldergate in 2024. We're currently getting ready to publish the results of our latest group project, this time about Micklegate, in October 2025.

Our big project in 2016 and 2017 was about World War 1 and its effect on our area, with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support our researches into a wide range of themes about the impact on our area. This included a series of films, now on YouTube here

From 2018 until 2022 two of our members explored the history of industries in Clementhorpe, resulting in a book published in 2022, Made in Clementhorpe.

During 2020-2021, when COVID restricted in-person activity, we devised a series of self-guided walks around our area, using the izi smartphone app.

Our Poverty Project, Making ends meet on Nunnery Lane: revealing local poverty in the Victorian period, ran from 2018-2023, using the Poor Law Records in York Explore as a basis for examining the lives of poor people in York, particularly in the parish of St Mary Bishophill Junior.

In 2024 two of our members produced a research report on the history of the Chocolate Works site on Bishopthorpe Road.
