A South Bank Slum? Caroline St redevelopment in the 1960s

Our next talk is on Friday 27 May 2022 at 7.30pm, when our member Rob Stay will be talking about what happened to the Caroline Street area between Bishopthorpe Rd and Nunnery Lane in the 1960s.

This talk will take place at Clements Hall, our first real talk for two years.

At that time the City Council demolished six streets and a long-established community of around 1,000 people, together with local shops and small businesses. The streets were Caroline, Clement, Drake, Price, Spencer and Victoria. Displaced residents were mostly rehoused by the Council all over the city and the site was later redeveloped for social housing - today’s Nunnery Lane estate.

Rob has kindly agreed to repeat this talk on Zoom in June. Follow this link for details.
