Landscapes of pre-industrial Clementhorpe

Simon Batchelor

Plate 6

Section of John Speed's Map of York 1611

Simon has previously hosted fascinating local history walks in our area for the history group. He says:

We're familiar with the modern landscape of Clementhorpe. Its industrial heritage is reflected in its terraced housing and factory buildings, its interwar suburban estates and its modern developments, yet there is apparently little evidence for the landscapes which preceded this. In this talk I hope to give a brief glimpse of how this area developed prior to the nineteenth century. As an added bonus I may also hope to answer the question why is South Bank so called?

This talk is based on my initial research into the pre-industrial development of the area (which formed the basis of my MA(Res)). The research is ongoing, so watch this space, as there maybe more updates forthcoming.
