Blossom Street through Time
We’re already working on our next book, this time about Blossom Street in York. Around 300 yards long, it starts at Micklegate Bar and ends at the junction with Holgate Road and East Mount Road. It’s one of York’s early suburbs and historically an important route into York.
It will be the subject of our next talk, “Blossom Street through Time”, by Susan Major, on Friday 23 January at 7.45 pm in Clements Hall.
We usually offer five talks each year about our area and this will be an opportunity to join our Group as a member or renew your subscription, but we welcome guests too. In 2026 we're offering full membership at £10 pa (with free entry to all talks) or online Membership at £5 pa (with links provided to recordings of our talks*). This is a useful option for members who live elsewhere, or who are housebound. Non-members are also very welcome to come, paying £3 per talk. To join us please contact our Membership Secretary by email chlhg.membership@gmail.com or leave a message at Clements Hall on 01904 466086. If any of you can do this in advance of the talk it would help to avoid queues.
Susan will be explaining the historical significance of Blossom Street for York over many centuries, the scene of many tragic events leading towards the Bar. We've been researching the Crescent too. She'll also highlight some famous buildings and significant residents. As usual we're very interested in attracting memories and old photos. Local people remember many famous traders such as Shearsmith’s, the Forsselius Garage and the Odeon Cinema, with the old English Martyrs School behind, and long-gone pubs. There were also a few surprising early businesses which you might not be aware of.
Blossom Street will be the seventh and final book in our award-winning series, following the publication of our Micklegate book in October 2025. For details of all our books see here.
* occasionally a talk cannot be recorded.
