Tracing the history of buildings
Susan Major writes
David Olusoga’s latest series of A House Through Time features a house in Edinburgh, and is as riveting as ever, do try and watch it. He brings the past to life, finding out the stories of people living under the same roof, decades apart.
His first series, based on a Liverpool house, appeared in 2018, and at that time I was already working on a similar approach for a book about shop histories on Bishy Road. I attracted funding from our local traders’ association, the Micklegate Ward Fund, the Noel Goddard Terry Charitable Trust and the Yorkshire Architectural and York Archaeological Society (YAYAS). This meant that proceeds from sales could go into a book fund for the next book. As a result we’ve had the funding in place for a good print run of each of our subsequent books, which capture the history of our local communities.
